Saturday in the Park Collecting GLOBE Data

On Saturday, April 17, Molly Duhamel along with her students from Otsego Junior High School performed GLOBE water quality tests at Mary Jane Thurston Park in Grand Rapids OH. The students collected water from two locations: water flowing before the dam and water after the dam, for comparative study. For some of the protocols, students used two testing instruments to test the accuracy of their data. For example, students used nitrate test strips and Chemetrics nitrate test kit. The students brought samples back to the classroom for water quality testing. For tests which needed to be done at the location, students described what was done via photos along with the results. In the fall, Otsego students measured the water quality of the Maumee River at the same location. Students will be using the GLOBE data to complete research projects which will be presented the Midwest Earth System Science Virtual Student Symposium held virtually on May 13, 2021. Two pre-service teachers, Brett Harvard and Sarah Lumbrezer, from Bowling Green State University, assisted the students in their data collection. These GLOBE-trained pre-service teachers will hopefully continue in GLOBE and implement GLOBE into their classrooms in the future.
