Smoke is pouring over southern Africa in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on August 20, 2003. Active fires (marked in red) were detected in Zimbabwe (top left) Mozambique (right), South Africa (lower left), and Lesotho (bottom center).

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
