Fires, probably related to agriculture, burned near the shores of three east African lakes in early October 2009. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on October 1, 2009. Fires, marked by red dots, appear especially numerous along the western shore of Lake Tanganyika. Fires also burn south and west of Lake Mweru. Isolated fires also burn along the shores of Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa).
