Muddy floodwaters lingered around the city of Kheshgi on August 5, 2010. Torrential monsoon rains forced the Kabul River in northern Pakistan over its banks days earlier, and standing water still buried farmlands and settlements along the Kabul River floodplain.
The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on August 5, 2010. The Kabul River meanders over flat ground in this area, and standing water outside of the river’s banks forms large loops of water similar in shape to the river’s path. Flooding appears especially severe in the northwest, although this appearance may result partly from the absence of many high-profile features in that area.
