Fires in New Guinea
October 22, 2003

On October 22, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image of the island of New Guinea. This image is focused on the western part of the island, which is the Irian Jaya region of Indonesia. (The eastern part of the island is the country of Papua New Guinea.) Numerous fires burned across the southern part of the island; they were detected by MODIS and are marked with red dots in this image.
