Herbig-Haro 49/50 Fade (Spitzer, Webb)

This video compares images of Herbig-Haro 49/50—an outflow from a nearby still-forming star.

The first image is an infrared view captured by the retired Spitzer Space Telescope.  The second image shows the high-resolution details of this object revealed by the Webb Space Telescope’s near- and mid-infrared instruments. Webb reveals the fuzzy object at the tip of the outflow in the Spitzer image is actually a distant spiral galaxy. Looking closely at the core region of the spiral galaxy in the Webb image, it appears to display hints of “sidelobes”, which suggests the galaxy could be a barred spiral galaxy.
