Dust blew off the coast of Libya and over the Mediterranean Sea on April 28, 2009. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image the same day. In this true-color picture, camel-colored dust forms a thick plume over the ocean. The source points for this dust storm are not obvious in this image, but the clouds in the southeast could be associated with the same weather system that stirred the dust. Inland from the coastal mountains, Libya’s land surface is largely a sand sea.
