Fire near Vandenberg Air Force Base

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of a fire on the southern edge of Vandenberg Air Force Base on October 28, 2010. The fire is marked in red. According to the Associated Press, the fire started at 1:00 p.m. This image was taken just over an hour later, at 2:10 p.m. Some of the base was evacuated.

Many NASA missions are launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, including Aqua, the satellite that acquired this image. Daily images of southern California, where the base is located, are available from the MODIS Rapid Response Team.
