Fires and Haze in Southeastern China

Dozens of fires were burning in the forested, hilly terrain of southeastern China on December 3, 2003. The fires were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite, and their locations are marked in red in this image. To the northeast of the scene, haze is very thick over the coastline.
