May 11, 2002

Just south of the image of the Democratic Republic of Congo acquired on May 9, 2002, this image of Angola (left) and Zambia (right) show that fires are burning over a wide area of central and southern Africa this May. Smoke that was visible in an image of the region on May 9, 2002, (bottom right) had cleared up by the time of this image. Both images were acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite.

Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of this scene at the sensor's fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapidfire site.
