In southern Mexico between Lake Chapala (gray-green lake at upper left) and Mexico City (gray patch amid clouds in upper right quadrant) dozens of fires were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite during its daytime overpass on May 17, 2004. Actively burning fires are marked with red dots.
