In south-central Russia, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite detected dozens of fires (marked with red dots) on August 26, 2003. The wide green ribbon running toward the upper left of the image is the Ob’ River plain.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
