Over western Africa, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this image of numerous fires (red dots) burning in Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea. This image was acquired on November 2, 2002. At the top of the image are the southern reaches of the Sahara Desert.
