A huge plume of smoke drifts westward over the Atlantic Ocean from a massive forest fire in southwestern Portugal in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite. The active fire locations have been enhanced in yellow. This image was acquired on September 13, 2003.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
