The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of Hurricane Dorian at 2:05 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (18:05 Universal Time) on September 1, 2019.

Around this time of this image, Dorian was a powerful category 5 storm with sustained winds of 185 miles (295 kilometers) per hour. The center of the storm appears directly over Great Abaco, an island in the northern Bahamas. The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Dorian had become the strongest hurricane on record in the northwestern Bahamas.

NHC forecasters predicted that Hurricane Dorian should deliver hurricane force winds to eastern Florida through the middle of the week. Forecasts also show an increased chance that Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina will be affected by strong winds and storm surge later in the week.
