Smoke from Fires in Canada

June 28, 2010

Thick smoke clouded the skies over the Canadian Arctic on June 28, 2010. The gray-brown smoke drifts north over Canada’s Northwest Territories and Nunavut and the Beaufort Sea. The smoke is coming from fires burning in the boreal forests of northern Canada. Smoke from forest fires can travel thousands of kilometers, affecting air quality far from the fires.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. The large image is the highest-resolution version of the image, but the image is available in additional resolutions from the MODIS Rapid Response Team.
