A spring storm dropped snow across the mountainous areas of West Virginia, Western Maryland, and Pennsylvania. On April 8, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of the swath of white.
Snowfall in this region is “not uncommon in the first half of April,” according to weather blogger Jason Samenow. Cold air over the Great Lakes moved eastward until it encountered the Appalachians, at which point it was forced up to elevations where temperatures were cold enough to produce snow.
