June 7, 2002

Many fires (red pixels) were burning across the Henan Province in eastern China on June 7, 2002, filling the skies with a thick pall of greyish smoke as far north as Beijing. The smoke appears to be blowing northeastward over the Yellow Sea toward Korea and Japan. This true-color image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA’s Terra satellite.

Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of this scene at the sensor’s fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapidfire site.
