The right, Hubble image appears as a large oval cloud with different layers. The outer layer is blue. The inner layer is a white ring with two white lobes that have what appears to look like red jets at each end. The center is less dense and holds a bright-white point of light.

Caldwell 59: Amateur Image vs. Hubble Image

Caldwell 59 (C59) is a planetary nebula located some 1,400 light-years away. Also called NGC 3242 and the Ghost of Jupiter, Caldwell 59 formed after an average star like the Sun finished burning through its supply of hydrogen and helium fuel. The left image was taken with an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope using a 0.63x focal reducer and a DSLR Camera. The right image was taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
