West of the White Nile River (green line running down from upper right), numerous fires were burning in the Sahel (transition zone between the deserts to the north and the savannas to the south), mostly in southern Sudan. This image of the fires (marked in red) was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on November 10, 2004.
