Fires in Central and Southern Africa

Across central and southern Africa, numerous fires (red dots) are burning throughout Democratic Republic of Congo (west of Lake Tanganyika), and Tanzania (east). Heavy smoke hangs over the northern half of the image, at least some of which is from the the eruption of Nyamuragira volcano on July 26, 2002. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on July 28, 2002.
