Dr. Jeffrey Hayes
Jeffrey Hayes is a Discipline Scientist in the Astrophysics and Heliophysics Divisions at NASA HQ. His duties include the support of missions currently in operation (Mission Operations and Data Analysis; MO&DA), as well as their data holdings. He is the Program Executive for the 8 operational Astrophysics missions (as of 2016) as well as the 19 operational NASA Heliophysics missions. In the past he has been the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Program Scientist, the Program Executive for the Astrophysics data archives, and for 5 years the program officer of the Astrophysics Data Analysis (ADP) Program.
Prior to joining NASA in 2002, Hayes was a senior scientist working on the OMPS (Ozone Mapper and Profiler Suite) instrument on the NPOESS satellite project, which was launched in 2011 as Suomi/NPP. Before that, a member of a 6-person team of on-site resident astronomers, responsible for overseeing the acquisition of data obtained for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in Sunspot NM.
In a 10-year period at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which runs the HST, Hayes was as an instrument scientist the Faint Object Sprectrograph and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instruments, and worked on digitizing the entire night sky for Internet access as well as the HST Guide Star Catalogue.
He has taught physics and astronomy at a number of universities: Loyola University in Maryland, Rutgers University in New Jersey, the University of Maine, Carleton University in Ottawa, and others, and has had numerous observing runs at the NOAO Kitt Peak National Observatory, the NRAO Very Large Array, Lowell Observatory, Observatoire de Mont Megantic, and the Apache Point Observatory. He has had a hand in editing a number of topical proceedings as well as IAU symposium 179 on multi-wavelength sky surveys.
He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Universite de Montreal, and Rutgers University, as well as a visiting scientist at Fermilab.
He has studied at a number of institutions, including the University of Maine, Saint Mary’s University and Dalhousie University, both in Halifax NS, and at Carleton University in Ottawa, and is a member of the American Astronomical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
