AGN Science with the Roman EXtreme Deep Field (RXDF) and Other Large Surveys in the Roman Era

Speaker

Dr. Anton Koekemoer (STScI)

Abstract

The recently launched Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, commencing science operations in early 2027, will vastly expand AGN science. With an instantaneous field of view of ~1,000 square arcminutes it delivers Hubble-quality imaging and spectroscopy over ~100-200x the area of Hubble's ACS and WFC3/IR cameras respectively, at wavelengths from 0.5 to 2.3 microns. Large extragalactic surveys are planned with Roman, including the High-Latitude Wide Area Survey (HLWAS) covering ~5100 square degrees, the deeper High-Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS) covering ~18 square degrees, and the Roman EXtreme Deep Field (RXDF) reaching AB=30 mag over ~0.2 square degrees, as deep as the iconic Hubble EXtreme Deep Field (HXDF) over ~140x wider area. These surveys will yield millions of AGN, covering many orders of magnitude in luminosity and reaching into cosmic dawn. Obtaining samples that are orders of magnitude beyond the limits of current HST and JWST surveys will enable detailed exploration of physical questions related to black hole formation and growth, AGN co-evolution with their hosts, feedback and fuelling mechanisms, environmental factors, and a rich variety of other questions that simply cannot be addressed with the more limited current samples. This presentation explores the expected contributions to AGN science from Roman, as well as synergies with other current and future observatories for advancing AGN science into the future.

Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.
