Lynx2030 Science Analysis Group: Preparing for the Next X-ray Flagship

Speakers

  • Fabio Pacucci, SAO
  • Steven Ehlert, MSFC

Abstract

The Lynx mission concept from the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey remains a powerful foundation for the planning of a future X-ray flagship mission. The science unlocked by Lynx's large mirror area, high angular resolution imaging, and spectroscopic instruments still remains largely unaddressed since the Lynx Concept Study Report was delivered in 2019. The Lynx 2030 Science Analysis Group (SAG) was formed to investigate how new scientific discoveries, especially in the era of JWST, telescope launches, and technological developments, might inform a future iteration of a Lynx-like mission. In this talk, we will summarize the findings of the five working groups that contributed to the final SAG report, as well as possible directions for a 2030 flagship design.

This cropped horizontal image has layers of semi-opaque rusty red colored gas and dust that starts at the bottom right and goes toward the top left. There are three prominent pillars rising toward the top left. The left pillar is the largest and widest. The peaks of the second and third pillars are set off in darker shades of brown and have red outlines.
