Scores of fires (red dots) along the Lena River (center) in eastern Russia are cloaking the skies over the Central Siberian Plateau with a thick shroud of smoke. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was acquired on August 19, 2002.
