On October 15, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this image of scores of fires billowing thick smoke over central South America. This image pictures northern Bolivia (bottom) and southwestern Brazil (top). Fires detections are marked with red dots.
