Fires in Eastern Australia
September 15, 2003

Dozens of fires were detected across eastern Australia on September 15, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. In this image, active fire detections have been marked in yellow. Most of the fires are burning in the Great Dividing Range Mountains, which stretch along the eastern margin of Australia, but a few can be seen burning southwest of the city of Brisbane, which makes a cement-colored patch at upper right.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
