In eastern Asia, farmers are preparing land for springtime agricultural activities, using fire to clear fields and to stimulate renewal of pasture. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on April 9, 2003, shows scores of fires (red dots) and smoke across Russia (top) and China (center). Large dark burn scars show the extent of the burned areas.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS? maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
