In the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, the Padua, Grand Prix and Old Fires have created a broken fire line that at times has stretched out over forty miles. This view of the region around Arrowhead Lake (top right of overview image) shows a wall of smoke from the Old Fire towering over the mountains south of the lake. In places the flaming fire fronts were burning so brightly, they were visible to the Ikonos satellite from 432 miles in space. This image was captured on October 28, 2003. The spatial resolution (detail) of the large image is 4 meters per pixel.
