As Northern Hemisphere autumn progresses toward winter, fire activity in the Sahel and savannas just south of Africa’s Sahara Desert begins to increase. This image of western Africa captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Terra satellite on November 10, 2003, shows active fires marked with red dots.
