While forest fires across much of the country died back last week, a new large fire roared to life in the southern mountains of Portugal over the weekend of August 9-10. This image of the fire (marked in red) near the country’s southwest coast was captured on August 11, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. The smoke plume from the blaze stretches northward the length of the country.
