On April 26, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of scores of fires burning across western Russia near its border with Eastern Europe. Along with the retreating ice in the Gulf of Finland (upper left, north of Estonia) and other bodies of water, the agricultural fires (marked in red) spread across the countryside are a sign of spring.
