In this activity, curated by the University of Alaska Museum of the North, learners make a sky map and use it to identify constellations at different times of the night and different months. For thousands of years, people have told stories about the patterns they see in the sky. A constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a pattern or picture. Although the International Astronomical Union recognizes 88 official constellations, cultures all over the world and throughout time have made different constellations from the same stars.
