Magnetic Math

The front cover of the lesson includes:A black background In the upper left hand corner is “National Aeronautics and Space Administration” in a small, light blue fontIn the upper right hand corner the NASA logo is comprised of a small filled in blue circle with ‘NASA’ written in bold white letters in the center, small stars, an elliptical orbital path in white, and a red winged chevron cross and orbit the wordThe title ‘Magnetic Math’ runs vertically up the right hand side of the page in a light blue fontTo the left of the title is Jupiter with the orbital paths of two moons in yellow and purple and blue magnetic field lines around itTo the left of that is a Solar Magnetic Field Color representation of a three dimensional model of the solar corona with the Sun in the middle Below that is an image taken by NASA's TRACE satellite of a small fraction of the Sun and shows orange loops rising above the surface near two sunspots of lighter color and intensity. The horseshoe shape of the magnetic field is anchored at its two 'feet' in the dark sunspot regions

Educator guide containing hands-on activities, with embedded math problems, that explore the properties of magnetism.Co-created with teachers, this collection of hands-on activities was intended for students looking for additional challenges in the math and physical science curriculum in grades 9 through 12. Students explore magnetism and magnetic fields, both through drawing and geometric construction, and by using simple algebra to quantitatively examine magnetic forces, energy, and magnetic field lines and their mathematical structure.
