Mars Rock Samples

On Feb. 18, 2021, the Mars Perseverance rover made its harrowing landing at Jezero Crater. Almost immediately, the rover began an expedition to collect a geologically diverse set of rock samples that could help answer the question if Mars once had ancient microbial life. Perseverance has identified those rocks, cored, sealed them and set several sample tubes down on the crater floor for a future mission to pick up. Of the 43 tubes Perseverance brought to Mars, 38 are for collecting samples, and five are "witness tubes" designed to document the cleanliness of its sampling system throughout the mission. Three witness tubes have been sealed: on Sol 160 (June 22, 2021), Sol 499 (July 16, 2022), and Sol 586 (Oct. 14, 2022). The third witness tube, sealed at the "Amalik" sampling location, was placed in the rover's backup sample depot.

Mars 2020: Perseverance Rover

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took this selfie on July 23, 2024, the 1,218th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. To the left of the rover near the center of the image is the arrowhead-shaped rock nicknamed “Cheyava Falls,” which has features that may bear on the question of whether Mars was home to microscopic life in the distant past. The small dark hole in the rock is where Perseverance took a core sample, which is now in a sample tube stored in the rover’s belly. The white patch to the right of the hole is where the rover used an abrasion tool to clear away the top surface, allowing science instruments to study the rock’s composition.
