More than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed by a wildfire in the southern part of Palm Bay, Florida, in mid-May 2008. Dry conditions—possibly abetted by arsonists, according to news reports— created a fire emergency in the state over the weekend of May 10, with more than a hundred fires breaking out. This image of two fires (outlined in red) in central Florida was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on May 13.
The high-resolution image provided above is at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the United States in additional resolutions and formats via a clickable map.
