Fires Surrounding Lake Baikal

East of still-frozen Lake Baikal in south-central Russia, numerous fires (red dots) were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on March 22, 2003. As snow retreats, farmers begin preparing land for spring planting.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS? maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
