South of the city in Thessaloniki in north-central Greece, a large forest fire forced thousands of people to evacuate the southern tip of the Kasandra Peninsula on August 21, 2006. The racing fire forced people to the coastline of the popular tourist area, where many were evacuated by boats. This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 22. The locations where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red. Smoke spreads east and south over the Aegean Sea.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the area at additional resolutions.
