On July 24, 2005, fires were raging along the Lena River in central Russia on the Central Siberian Plateau. Thick smoke from the burning forests spreads across the scene. This image of the fires (marked in red) was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
