Runaway Supermassive Black Hole Illustration

This illustration shows a black field speckled with white, yellow and red galaxies. A black hole, near the left, bottom corner of the image, plows through space, leaving a diagonal trail of newborn stars stretching back to the black hole's parent galaxy.

This is an artist's impression of a runaway supermassive black hole that was ejected from its host galaxy as a result of a tussle between it and two other black holes. As the black hole plows through intergalactic space it compresses tenuous gas in front to it. This precipitates the birth of hot blue stars. This illustration is based on Hubble Space Telescope observations of a 200,000-light-year-long "contrail" of stars behind an escaping black hole.

Extended Description

This illustration shows a black, deep-space field speckled with seemingly tiny white, yellow and red galaxies of various shapes. Set against this background is the depiction of a black hole plowing through space. The black hole leaves a long, diagonal trail of newborn stars stretching back to the black hole's parent galaxy in the upper right corner. Looming large near the left, bottom corner of the image, the black hole is represented by a black half-sphere. The material closest to the black hole appears pink, white and streaky. Beyond this, the leading edge of the disk, near the bottom, left corner, is milky violet. The disk trails off behind the black hole, becoming black. Beyond the disk is a diagonal "contrail" of blue-and-pink, newborn stars. Like the wake from a ship, this contrail begins at the middle of the image and extending toward the blue-and-pink parent galaxy. The bridge of stars appears relatively wide closest to the black hole's disk, but it trails off, becoming narrower as it recedes from the black hole and approaches the parent galaxy.
