Show | Grades 6-12+ | This audio resource features a fascinating conversation with Dr. Carolus J. (Karel) Schrijver from the Space Weather Living History project, which preserves important perspectives from key figures in heliophysics. Prior to working at The Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center, Dr. Karel Schrijver’s studied astronomy in The Netherlands. Among his many research interests, he investigated the Sun's magnetism and the variability that drove all of the space weather. He also saw the need to quantify impact of space weather not just on infrastructures but on our daily lives. For him, one turning point of space weather studies happened with (STEREO) observing the Sun from all sides in the late 2000s. Another turning point was seeing a comet go into the solar atmosphere, allowing researchers to learn the conditions of the solar corona. (The comet journey preceded the launch of the Parker Solar Probe.) His parting comments offered some food for thoughts, “Space weather is something that we should think about as happening throughout the universe. And there are lessons in the universe at large that we should apply to our own sun.”
