Pillars of Creation (Visualization Mosaic)

Mosaic of the Pillars of Creation visualization model, composed of 4 alternating strips of Hubble and Webb versions oriented 45 degrees clockwise from vertical.

This image is a mosaic of visible-light and infrared-light views of the same frame from the Pillars of Creation visualization. The three-dimensional model of the pillars created for the visualization sequence is alternately shown in the Hubble Space Telescope version (visible light) and the Webb Space Telescope version (infrared light).

In the Hubble version of the model, the pillars feature dark brown opaque dust and bright yellow ionized gas set against a greenish-blue background. The Webb version of the model showcases orange and orange-brown dust that is semi-transparent, with light blue ionized gas against a dark blue background. The visualization sequence fades back and forth between these two models as the camera flies past and amongst the pillars. These contrasting views illustrate how observations from the two telescopes complement each other and probe different science aspects of the pillars.

Extended Description

Rectangular mosaic of Hubble and Webb versions of the Pillars of Creation visualization model. The mosaic is composed of four rectangular strips oriented 45 degrees clockwise from vertical. The strips alternate between the Hubble (visible light) and Webb (infrared light) versions of the visualization model. Each strip is labeled with the telescope name: "Hubble" in the lower right corners of the first and third strips; "Webb" in the upper left corners of the second and fourth strips. The boundaries between the strips are sharp. The Webb strips have drop shadows that make it look like the Webb strips are overlaid on top of a larger Hubble image.

The mosaic shows three vertical, finger-like structures (the pillars) that appear to be made of thick dusty or smoke-like material. The edges of the pillars are glowing, with thin wisps of material moving away into space as though the pillars are evaporating. In the Hubble version, the pillars are dark brown and opaque. The space surrounding and beyond the pillars is greenish blue. In the Webb version, the pillars are bright orange to brown with a distinct area of bright red at the top of the middle pillar. A small red star appears at the tip of a small protrusion in the middle of the left pillar, and the space surrounding and beyond the pillars is deep blue.
