Hubble's Night Sky Challenge is a year-round observing adventure for amateur astronomers to commemorate 35 years of Hubble science and discoveries. This challenge can also serve as a guide for star parties. Below, you’ll find a list of Messier and Caldwell night sky targets visible during June that Hubble has imaged over the years for both Northern and Southern Hemisphere observers.

Helpful Tips

  • Some objects may be visible from most locations on Earth, while others are only visible at specific latitudes and may not be accessible for those in other parts of the world. This page has two lists of recommended targets: one for the Northern Hemisphere and another for the Southern Hemisphere. For best results, we recommend using the list that corresponds to the part of the world you live in.
  • If the name of the object starts with an "M," it's part of the Messier catalog; names that start with "C" are part of the Caldwell catalog.
  • A difficulty scale of 1-3 denotes how easy an object is to find: 1 is the easiest and 3 the hardest. The easiest targets for each hemisphere are listed first, and the most difficult ones are listed last.

Northern Hemisphere Objects

These night sky objects are visible to viewers in the Northern Hemisphere.

Hubble view of M3 - a ball of thousands of stars.

M3

Object Type: Globular Cluster
Difficulty: 1

Hubble view of M5, a collection of thousands of stars of different colors.

M5

Object Type: Globular Cluster
Difficulty: 1

Image center holds a dense sphere of stars in colors of red, orange, yellow, white, and blue. The stars are densely packed at image center and taper out toward the image's edges. They are on a black background.

M80

Object Type: Globular Cluster
Difficulty: 2

A large spiral galaxy stretches across the image, with a bright core surrounded by large spiral arms laced through with dark dust and purple and pink regions of star formation.

M83: Southern Pinwheel

Object Type: Spiral Galaxy
Difficulty: 3

Looking like a pinwheel, this face-on spiral galaxy holds a bright-white core at image center. Arms curve outward from the core. They hold dark dust lanes and bright star-forming regions. All on a black background dotted with stars.

M101: Pinwheel Galaxy

Object Type: Spiral Galaxy
Difficulty: 3

This spiral galaxy is shaped like a hurricane, with a glowing white spherical center. The arms of gas and dust closest to the center are orange, red, brown, and pale yellow in color. Farther away from the center, the arms are layers of brown and blue.

C45

Object Type: Spiral Galaxy
Difficulty: 3

Bright-white spherical cluster of stars in the upper left corner. Stars taper off down and out to the right of the cluster against a black background. Reddish-orange stars dot the scene.

Object Type: Globular Cluster
Difficulty: 3

Southern Hemisphere Objects

These night sky objects are visible to viewers in the Southern Hemisphere.

M5

Object Type: Globular Cluster
Difficulty: 1

This black and white image is dominated by a single large, bright star with x-shaped beams of light emanating from it across the image. Other, smaller stars are visible around it.

C89: S Normae Cluster

Object Type: Open Cluster
Difficulty: 1

Image center holds a dense sphere of stars in colors of red, orange, yellow, white, and blue. The stars are densely packed at image center and taper out toward the image's edges. They are on a black background.
